Montgomery chose to make a frontal assault in an area defended by elements of Panzergrenadier Regiment Afrika and the weak Giovani Fascisti (Young Fascists). The 151st Infantry Brigade of the 50th Division reinforced by forty –odd Valentine tanks were able to cross a soggy floored wadi but no AT guns could follow. This would have dire consequences, for in the afternoon, the 15th Panzer Division counterattacked. . .
