Conflict
The city of Graudenz was declared a fortress on 27 January. The fortress defenses were manned by elements of the Hermann Goering Division and various Army, Luftwaffe, Naval, Police and Fortress units. The fighting had been very tough, and by 22 February very few antitank weapons and artillery guns remained. There were still a significant number of various and dangerous antiaircraft guns, and in the morning hours they barked, helping fight off an attack on the slaughterhouse. The battle was hard fought with heavy casualties on both sides. The German positions at the slaughterhouse and tobacco factory eventually broke. Several guns and the remnants of the fortress continued to put up stiff resistance. The Russians would be forced to fight for every inch of ground beyond the slaughterhouse in blood. . . .
