To run VASL.mod v5.8.2, Extract it from VASLv582.zip and run it under VASSAL 3.0.17. You can get VASSAL 3.0.17 from http://www.vassalengine.org/community/index.php?option=com_downloads&Itemid=26, select '3.0' from the 'Archived Versions' section.
Note that VASL 5.8 versions will not run under VASSAL 3.1, and VASL 5.9 will not run under VASSAL 3.0. However, log and save files created in one version can be opened under the other, and FtF gameplay can also occur between users running different versions.
