Conflict
After the grueling ordeal of Ortona, the Canadian advance along the Adriatic coast eventually ground to a halt at the end of January. What followed was twelve weeks of static warfare characterized by daytime sniping and shelling and aggressive nocturnal patrolling. By day the Riccio valley was a no-man's-land. At night, control of the valley went to the most aggressive side. Both sides would sally forth to take prisoners, ambush enemy patrols, set booby traps and reconnoiter enemy fortifications.
