Two gorgeous maps, no less than 5 countersheets, 32 pages of special rules and designer notes, and finally a reprint of some Red Barricades rules that are required in this supplement, too. It's too early for me to judge the quality of the scenarios, but considering the time it took to develop and produce this beast, I'm fairly confident that playtesting was conducted properly. Looks like we got ourselves a new classic with this one! That was a fun tonie sized taste of the open terrain on the VotG map. I played the Russians against Walt's Germans and had a good game throughout. I think I got lucky with my sniper having a go at Walt's 9-1 early on and got to pop a few Mol rounds off holding back the southern force. Walt had his way with the ROF on his mortar and MGs, but in the end - the Ruskies held the fort and the northern group taking on victory location couldn't quite hold back the breakout attempt the went to the south of the square. If his 9-1 had survived - that attack might well have made the breakout impossible. Great scenario - glad I got to play some of them FtF :) On Jan 23, 2008 1:19 PM, Vic Provost wrote: > Greetings from the Bunker to all at the Main ASL > Mailing List. Reading through the ASLSK3 section 6.7 talks about Guns as Targets. But it doesn't say what target type table to use? Does a Gun/MA use the ATT to attack a Gun? Should a Gun/MA use the ITT to attack a Gun? I'm guessing you use either, depending on the Ordnance ammo type available? So would this example be correct: 1) A German 50L AT is located at tS2 with CA of R2/S3. 2) An American M4A2 75mm is stopped in tO10 with CA of O9/R9. 3) The American does a PFPh at the Gun using HEAT on the ATT against the Gun...is that a logical thing to do? 4) Range 9, no TEM, red TH#7 on ATT, 50L is avg target size, +2 DRM gunshield, and no HA for Ordnance...so +2 DRM...correct? 5) Final DR is 5 (colored die is 1, maintain ROF)...a hit...no CH because a 2 is needed on the ATT. 7) Because of ATT, use the IFT not the HEAT TK table. 8) Final DR on the IFT, column 12/70, is 4. No KIA, no K, so add any TEM and get "new" final DR value... ...since there is no TEM and the gunshield +2 was on the TH DR, the final IFT DR is still a 4. 9) The manning unit of the gun takes a 3MC. Is that example correct? Whew! Goes much faster doing it than typing it out. =) The other question that I always stumble on is on the Firer Based TH table--case 16 for ASLSK3, case C4 for ASL. A CE AFV (T turret) is moving during its MPh, it has an enemy AFV in LOS for 2.5 MP and wants to take the shot but must change CA one hex. Case A: +1 for T turret (or is this NA for BFF?) Case C: Case B (NA) plus +2 for T turret (total +3) Case C1: Case C (+2) +1 = +3 (total +6?) Case C2: NA Case C3: NA Case C4: Other...now what...add another +6? How many case C's do you use? Or, what is the DRM for a CE AFV T-turrent with 2.5 LOS MP against another AFV during the MPh and I need to change my CA one hex? My best guess is DRM +3 and lower dr x2 ... is that correct? That is applying Case C4 "only" which actually applies all the other cases in some form. If I maintained ROF the second shot, now at 3.5 MP, with no CA change, would be DRM +0 and lower dr x2 ... is that correct? So if I have LOS > 3 MP then the DRM is 0 but for lower dr x2...correct? Does this Case C issue make sense? I know it is me, but I keep ending up adding multiple Case C's and I don't think I should but for some reason, I get bogged down in it. OK, one last similar question on the To Hit DRM Target Based. DFF vs a Moving Vehicle <= 1MP in LOS is +5 DRM total...correct? Thanks! P.S. I read somewhere that all the ASL discussion moved to some forum...where is that? Matt E. HE (and SMOKE) are the only ammo types that can be fired when using the ATT (C3.33, ASLSK 3.2.4). The best ammo vs Guns are generally HE though. I will therefore assume you used HE for the following answers. > 4) Range 9, no TEM, red TH#7 on ATT, 50L is avg target size, +2 > DRM gunshield, and no HA for Ordnance...so +2 DRM...correct? No. Gunshield is not a TH DRM, but an effects DRM. There could be Emplacement +2 TEM, but TEM isn't added to the TH DR when using ATT anyway, so no DRM (unless the AFV is BU). > 5) Final DR is 5 (colored die is 1, maintain ROF)...a hit...no > CH because a 2 is needed on the ATT. Also no ROF, because mortars are the only weapon that can use the ATT and maintain ROF. > 7) Because of ATT, use the IFT not the HEAT TK table. No KIA, no K, > so add any TEM and get "new" final DR value......since there > is no TEM and the gunshield +2 was on the TH DR, the > final IFT DR is still a 4. As written above, the Gunshield would come into effect now, making it a final 6. But we may assume that the Gun didn't have Gunshield (at least not in the direction of the attack), giving a final 4... > 9) The manning unit of the gun takes a 3MC. > No. When using the ATT, any FP is halved, so you use the 6FP column instead, where the result is a 2MC. Now assume instead that you used HE on the ITT instead. If so, everything you wrote below were correct, except for adding Gunshield on the TH instead of effect DR, and indicating that a TK table could have been used. > The other question that I always stumble on is on the Firer > Based TH table--case 16 for ASLSK3, case C4 for ASL. > > A CE AFV (T turret) is moving during its MPh, it has an enemy AFV in > LOS for 2.5 MP and wants to take the shot but must change CA one hex. > > Case A: +1 for T turret (or is this NA for BFF?) It must instead expend one MP to change its VCA, or you could have changed the TCA freely with an earlier MP expenditure. > Case C: Case B (NA) plus +2 for T turret (total +3) Case B is NA in itself, but is an inherent part of Case C, so it is 2+2 for a total of +4 so far. > Case C1: Case C (+2) +1 = +3 (total +6?) You don't first add C and then C1 which includes C. You rather find wich C to use, in this case C1, with the following calculation: C + 1 = (B + 2) + 1 = (2 + 2) + 1 = 5, and that is the total so far. > Case C2: NA > Case C3: NA > Case C4: Other...now what...add another +6? > No. You don't add all of C1 a second time. You merely take C1 and add the extra given in C4 - in this case you will double the lower dr. > How many case C's do you use? > Never more than one. > Or, what is the DRM for a CE AFV T-turrent with 2.5 LOS MP against > another AFV during the MPh and I need to change my CA one hex? > First, assuming you're talking about the moving AFV, it must first change its CA to get the enemy AFV within it. Assuming you have done that, and has stopped, the DRM are +5 as explained above. If Non-Stopped, the DRM are the same, but the lower dr is doubled. > My best guess is DRM +3 and lower dr x2 ... is that correct? That > is applying Case C4 "only" which actually applies all the other > cases in some form. You are correct, except for missing that Case C actually includes Case B for another +2 DRM. > If I maintained ROF the second shot, now at 3.5 MP, with no CA change, > would be DRM +0 and lower dr x2 ... is that correct? No. You are still using Case C which is +4. One of case C, C1, C2 or C4 must *always* be used when firing in your MPh. > > OK, one last similar question on the To Hit DRM Target Based. DFF vs > a Moving Vehicle <= 1MP in LOS is +5 DRM total...correct? > No. <= 1 MP in LOS would be J2, which is J + 2. And since J is 2, 2 + 2 = 4. For a final advice. Go to the chapter D divider of the 2nd edition ASLRB, or to the article named "Stop and Go Traffic" (written by me) in Annual 97 (or was it 98?), and look up a table showing all DRM related to phases and motion/stopped/non-stopped status. It is most helpful. > > P.S. From aslbunker at yahoo.com Mon Feb 25 16:26:33 2008 From: aslbunker at yahoo.com (Vic Provost) Date: Mon, 25 Feb 2008 16:26:33 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Aslml] Dispatches from the Bunker February Update Message-ID: <331726.98663.qm@web32601.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Greetings from the Bunker to all at the Main ASL Mailing List. Now that everyone has received their copy of VotG Please remember that Dispatch #23 is devoted to VotG and although it turned out to be a year and a half premature in its release all the content in there on VotG is just as relevant today as it was the day it was printed, including the 3 scenarios that Tom Morin designed specifically for the newsletter. As for what is going on currently, We have been working very hard on Issue #26, due out in March at the Nor'Easter Tournament. Playtesting is now wrapped up and we are quite pleased with the 3 scenarios for #26. The scenarios are concentrating on the ETO this time with 2 actions in Italy and one combined arms beast on the Eastern Front. They are: Commandos Hold Fast: This is the first of 3 actions Adam Lunney submitted to me a couple years ago, with a couple platoons of British Commandos holding the SSR defined Olive Groves on Board 35 against 2 company sized waves of Panzergrenadiers from the 16th Panzer Div. A 6 lb 57L AT Gun gives the Brits a fighting chance and will give the German Panzer IVs caution in their advance. The German has a big edge in numbers but never count out those Commandos. Murphy Go Help the British: The 3rd in the ongoing Fabulous Thunderbirds series, this action sees them trying to wrest the high ground from tough German defenders from the Herman Goering Div. on Boards 9 & 15. It's uphill all the way but with numbers in their favor and a nice light armor matchup highlighting this fine design from Joe Gochinski. Shock at Kamenewo: Tom Morin's latest is an Eastern Front, combined arms melee with 18 Russian rifle squads and 10 various heavy and medium tanks attacking mixed elements of the 4th Panzer Div. spread out along 1/2 boards 4, 11, & 44. What makes this one unique is the Russian armor sets up HIP before bursting out of the woods. The German has a mix of elite and 1st line rifles along with medium tanks, 88L AA and 105 ART guns to combat the Russian onslaught. This has been a huge hit at the club and shows much promise. Also on tap for #26 will be another fine article by Jim Torkelson, he'll be looking at the Monster Scenario VotG1 The First Bid, Tom Morin will be doing a demo of this incredible scenario at the Nor'Easter. After spending considerable time on Making a Mess with Fire and Rubble, Carl Nogueira will now put his focus on the Urban Battlefield in Stalingrad with elements of RB and VotG to be examined in an ongoing series of tips for our BackPage. I'll have analysis of the new scenarios and more ASL home-cooking with a wrap-up on the Bunker Bash and Albany tourney and a preview of the upcoming Nor'Easter tournament. Of course the current Issue, #25 is our 10th Anniversary Issue and shipped out this past October. We have 3 fine with details below. Our own Jim Torkelson has yet another excellent scenario analysis, this one on HOBs OB8 Bloody Bobruisk. Our Tactical Tips guru Carl Nogueira continues more Terrain mayhem in the final segment on Fire in his Making a Mess Tactical Tips Series. I have local tourney news as usual. The Scenarios we have lined up are: Acorns in the Fire: Andy Clarke brings us an ETO combined arms action from New Years Day '45 with a company of GIs supported by 4 Shermans trying to clear a German defense, aided by a couple PzIVJ panzers, from the Board 19 crossroads. The US needs to make maximum use of its SMOKE and Firepower advantage to clean up this pocket of die hard defenders. Looks like this could be on many tourney lists down the line. Housing Crash: Ralph McDonald brings us more Eastern Front nastiness as a company of Ubermen SS 8-3-8 Assault Engineers crashes into a reinforced company of Russian Riflemen on Deluxe Boards b & d. Taking buildings on the other side of the SSR Anti- tank Ditch is the German Mission and the Russian defenders are in no mood to give them up. Nasty Tournament sized DASL fun. Heroic Defense of Wake - An intense PTO slugfest that Tom Morin has exhumed from his filing cabinet. We were going to submit it to the venerable On All Fronts over 12 years ago. It is the Japanese Night Assault on Wake Island 12 days after the initial attempt to take the Island was a complete disaster. This time they are assaulting the beach at night in this PTO mini-monster with 2 companies worth of 4-4-8s attacking a very mixed USA defense which has Marines, ad-hoc Naval personnel and even civilians manning the plethora of machine guns and ordnance available. It starts at night and sees twilight and eventually day as the fight proceeds inland over now 8 very hard fought turns. Sweden was represented by 20 players while the rest of the field was made up by players from Denmark, Norway, Finland, England, USA, Belgium, Holland and France. In a rematch of the 2003 and 2005 ASO final game Toby Pilling and Melvin Falk would face each other once again. This time in a deluxe scenario called Housing Crash ... Engineers, Flamethrowers, Heavy Machineguns and close quarter fighting fitting for a Tournament final. In a reversal of fortunes from 2003 and 2005 Melvin Falk triumphed this time around. This was Mel Falk?s 2nd win in Scandinavian Open. The first one was in 1998. Congratulations to Mel Falk. Well done. The game marked the end of a remarkable 34 game unbeaten streak in European Tournament games for Toby Pilling ? it also marked the beginning of a Continental Tournament sabbatical for Toby Pilling. The two things are unrelated. At Scandinavian Open we look forward to Toby returning to the ASL Tournament circuit. In addition to the main tournament ASO 2008 included 3 Minitournaments PTO Minitournament Winner - Derek Ward, Denmark Valor Of the Guards Minitournament Winner - Michiel Otten, Holland Men in Black Minitournament (Scenarios involving SS) Winner ? Retail/Wholesale orders began shipping last Thursday as well. We expect to be done with them by (we hope) Thursday, at which time VotG will be put up on our website. Also, *please note* that when put on our website, the MSRP of *Valor of the Guards* raises to $75. We added two countersheets and a few more scenario cards to the game than we budgeted, plus this game was priced out over 2.5 (maybe even 3) years ago. We had to tweak the price to make up for this. We honored all preorders (both individual and retail/wholesale) at the initial price. For Defensive Fire purposes this action counts as an expenditure of 1 MF using Non-Assault Movement. A DR equal to or less than the Coffee Creation Difficulty (CCD) noted on the Coffee Counter results in success. Apply a +1 DRM if the unit is inexperienced and any applicable leadership modifiers. If the attempt is successful, the unit gets refreshed and its thirst is quenched - increase that unit's IPC by one for the remainder of the scenario and mark it with a Caffeine counter. If the DR exceeds the modified CCD the CCA was unsuccessful or the quality of the coffee didn't have any impact on the unit. If the DR exceeds the CCD of the squad making the CCA by its ELR or more, a Sugar Depletion Check (SDC) is made. The difficulty of the SDC dr is depicted by the Sugar Depletion Number (SDN) on the front of the Coffee Counter. If the dr doesn't exceed the SDN there is still sugar available, if not the squad's sugar reserves are depleted and the Coffee Counter is flipped to its backside to note that the quality of any coffee made by this unit in further attempts is of marginally decreased quality. Lack of sugar results in a +1 DRM to any future CCD rolls by that unit (EXC: British squads Recall in the same manner as an AFV with a disabled MA). If the CCA DR results in an original 12, the unit also suffers a case of tremendous diarrhea in addition to a SDC and therefore becomes Pinned. Just thought I'd share.
